Symptoms that suggest eczema
Itch is the leading symptom. The skin may be dry between flares and red, weeping, or cracked during one. In long-standing disease the skin can thicken from scratching.
A fungal rash or psoriasis can look similar. Treatment for the wrong condition, especially a steroid on an untreated fungus, can make the rash spread. That is a reason to have a new rash seen.
Triggers worth writing down
Harsh soap, woollen clothes, sweat, low humidity, and fragranced products are frequent irritants. A true allergy to a cosmetic ingredient is possible and is investigated when the history points to a product.
Food allergy causes some eczema in young children, but blanket elimination diets in adults often do more harm than good unless a clinician is supervising them.
How treatment is usually structured
A bland moisturiser used every day is the maintenance. A prescribed anti-inflammatory cream is added for flares, in the potency and duration the doctor specifies. Infection, if present, is treated separately.
Children can be assessed at the clinic. The product and the amount used on a child are not the same as an adult tube left in the cupboard.
